Belonging to the Myrtaceae family, Eucalyptus radiata or Australian Eucalyptus is a variable-sized tree with narrow, sickle-shaped leaves (lanceolate). It produces small flowers grouped in seven to fifteen, forming club-shaped umbels with numerous stamens, and cup-shaped fruits. It is found in Australia, India, South Africa, and Madagascar.

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves. It appears as a clear liquid, colorless to pale yellow. The aroma of this essential oil is fresh and invigorating, due to its high cineole content.
